These retinal diseases have a major impact on the quality of life of most patients over the age of 70. Thus, one in three people in Europe is affected by these blinding conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, macular holes, etc.
It is estimated that over 1.6 million surgeries are performed worldwide each year, with an annual increase of 71%. This currently represents only a small percentage of current cases, the majority of which, particularly in emerging countries, involve patients receiving inappropriate treatments or no treatment at all.
